Asking “how much does a website cost?” is a bit like asking “how much does a house cost?”. The honest answer is “it depends” — which is also the most annoying answer in the world. So let's actually break down what it depends on, with real numbers, and without the sales pitch until the very end. (There is one. We're a studio. We have bills.)
How much does a website cost, by who builds it?
The biggest factor in price isn't the number of pages — it's who builds it, and how much thinking comes with the building.
Swipe the table →
| Option | Typical cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder | A monthly subscription — plus your evenings | Testing an idea on a tiny budget | Your time isn't free, and the result looks like everyone else's |
| Freelancer | Roughly $15–$80/hour (Duck Design) | Small, clearly defined projects | One person = one point of failure. Holidays happen. So do disappearances. |
| Offshore studio | Clutch lists $25–$49/hour bands for some categories | Defined projects with a sensible budget | Quality varies wildly — vet carefully |
| Agency in the US or UK | ~$100–$149/hour for shortlisted web design firms (Clutch); $3,000–$15,000 for a custom site from a small-to-mid agency (Parallel HQ) | Strategic, complex projects | You may be paying for the office plants |
Clutch also notes that most web design projects reviewed on its platform cost less than $10,000, and that agency location can sway the price considerably. That last part matters if you're comparing a London agency with a studio in India — the hourly rate gap is real, but so is the quality gap between good and bad studios everywhere.
What actually drives the price of a website?
- Unique page templates, not page count. Ten blog posts on one template cost far less than five pages that each need a bespoke design.
- Custom design vs. a theme. A template gets you online. A custom design gets you remembered.
- Copywriting. Someone has to write the words. If it's us, it's in the quote. If it's you, it's in your weekends.
- Motion and interactions. Smooth animation takes craft. Done well, it's why people screenshot your site.
- E-commerce and integrations. Payments, inventory, CRMs and booking systems all add build and testing time.
- A CMS. If your team will edit content often, a content management system is worth it.
- SEO and AI-search foundations. Structure, schema and speed cost less when built in than bolted on later.
- Decision-makers. Every extra person who must approve a design adds a week. We haven't done the maths. We've felt it.
“Cheap marble cracks. Expensive marble with no plan cracks too — just more slowly.”
What hidden costs come with a website?
The quote is rarely the whole bill. Budget for these too:
- Domain name and professional email
- Hosting (often modest for a static site, more for complex platforms)
- Premium fonts and stock photography or video licences
- Plugins or Shopify apps — many charge monthly, and they add up quietly
- Maintenance, security updates and small content changes
- Your own time for feedback, content and approvals
What does Eelven charge for a website?
Since we've just asked everyone else to be transparent, here's our own price list. These come straight from our pricing page, in euros:
| Service | Price (EUR) | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Brand Website | €3,000 – €7,000 | 3–5 weeks |
| Premium Animated Website | €7,000 – €18,000 | 5–9 weeks |
| Shopify Store | €4,000 – €15,000 | 4–8 weeks |
| Shopify Speed & CRO Sprint | €1,500 – €3,500 | 2 weeks |
When shouldn't you hire an agency at all?
Honesty is house rule number three, so here it is. Don't hire us — or anyone premium — if:
- You're still testing whether anyone wants your product. Use a builder, sell something, then come back.
- You need a single event page that lives for two weeks.
- You can't yet explain what you sell in one sentence. Fix the positioning first (we can help with that, but it's a different project).
How do you get an accurate website quote?
Send any studio these six things and you'll get a better quote, faster:
- 1What the website must achieve — enquiries, sales, bookings, credibility before a raise.
- 2The pages you think you need (a rough list is fine).
- 3Two or three websites you love, and one you hate. The hate is surprisingly useful.
- 4Whether your text, photos and product data are ready.
- 5Your deadline, and whether it's real or hopeful.
- 6Your budget range. Whispering it is fine. Hiding it just wastes everyone's time.
Want us to have a look? Tell us about your project and we'll send a fixed quote — or tell you honestly that a builder will do for now.
